The Last of Us Season 2 has finally started, and fans are excited. The first episode brings back Ellie and Joel, living a quiet life in Jackson, Wyoming.
But the biggest question is about a new character—Abby Anderson. She is shown on a mission to kill Joel, just like in the game The Last of Us Part II. In the game, Abby was a very controversial character. Many people didn’t like her at first. That’s because, in the game, players had to play as Abby, which made her feel different and distant from the main hero, Ellie.
But the show is trying something new. The writers of the game, Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, also worked on the TV series. In a ScreenRant interview, they explained how they’re making Abby more relatable this time. Since the show is not a video game, it can’t let you “play” as Abby.
So, the writers used more drama and backstory to help viewers understand her better. Druckmann said they showed important things about Abby earlier in the story. This way, people can start to care about her in episode one itself.
The show also adds new moments that were not in the game. For example, we learn more about Eugene, a small character from the game. In the game, you learn about Eugene by finding things he left behind. But in the show, his story is shown in a bigger and more emotional way. This is just one example of how the show is expanding the world of The Last of Us.
Abby is played by Kaitlyn Dever, and the creators were honest with her about how fans might react. Some fans didn’t like Abby in the game, but things may be different this time. Druckmann said that fans have mostly been supportive so far. He believes that people will see Abby’s full story and feel for her. He also said Kaitlyn brings both “strength and vulnerability” to the role.

The writers also revealed that Season 2 will not cover the whole story of The Last of Us Part II. The game is too big for one season. So, they started by deciding how the story should end, then worked backwards. This season will have seven episodes. Some parts of the game will stay the same, while others will change.
There’s even a tease about a scary part of the game—the Rat King, a terrifying zombie monster. While the writers didn’t confirm anything, they did say that it’s hard to tell the full story without including it. So, fans might want to get ready for some really intense moments later in the season.
If you’re a fan of the game or the show, The Last of Us Season 2 is shaping up to be a powerful and emotional ride. You can watch it now on HBO Max.
